“Best-laid plans” was an early phrase over this past year. While some organizational and program goals were derailed or at least delayed because of COVID, the pandemic also created opportunities we couldn’t have anticipated.
The rapid shift to virtual service provision required nimble agility from our counselling and language instruction teams.
In Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada, the shift to an online program resulted in a 30% increase in course occupancy and provided over 4,500 classroom hours – a welcome if unexpected outcome.
LAUNCHING
NEW PROGRAMS
Mental health has been a critical focus this past year and the effects of the pandemic have been overwhelming for most. To see our community through these difficult times, we expedited new programming in Counselling and Child Development. This added focus on skill-building for women, children and families to manage emotions, difficult situations and heightened stress stands out as a huge success of the past year.
Over 300 hours of workshops for parents/caregivers and families on topics like parenting skills, family relationships, and mindfulness. Primarily delivered virtually.
After attending programming at YW, 83% of adult clients noted they could better understand their feelings, 72% improved their emotion regulation and 91% identified they rarely had trouble controlling their behavior when they were upset.
