With the holiday season approaching, many Calgarians are looking forward to spending time with loved ones. Unfortunately, for some women and children in Calgary, the holiday season is not a time of comfort, but a continuing struggle to stay safe.
Family violence happens all year round. Every day, women and children flee their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs.
In 2012, the YWCA Sheriff King Home Emergency Shelter gave refuge to 633 people – 285 women and 348 children.
The YWCA of Calgary and several other closely-aligned community agencies belong to the Calgary Domestic Violence Collective, which has put together a list of help numbers for Calgarians experiencing family violence. Please share this list with friends and family, so victims of family violence can find a safe place to stay over the holidays.
