It’s been over a year since we’ve opened the doors to YW Calgary’s expanded and fully pet-friendly crisis shelter – and what a year it’s been!  If I could sum it up in one word it would be transformational. Welcoming pets into the shelter has not only reduced barriers for the women and children who walk through our doors, but it has also reminded us just how much joy, healing and hope a beloved pet can bring to a tough situation.

Pets matter more than you may think when it comes to leaving an abusive situation. For many people facing domestic violence, their pets are not just “pets.”  They are family, protectors and sources of unconditional love in hard times. Sadly, people who perpetrate abuse often exploit that bond and may threaten harm to a pet to make someone stay.

This is where YW Calgary decided to step in. When envisioning our newly expanded shelter we knew we needed to make the building fully pet friendly so that no one would have to choose between their own safety and the safety of their pet.

We did not do it alone, however. With the amazing support of partners like the Calgary Humane Society and Alberta Rescue Foundation, we’ve been able to ensure that pets coming into our shelter are cared for as much as their humans. From vet visits and assessments to cozy bedding, treats and toys, we’ve created a space where everyone is safe and supported.

One story that has stuck with me is Sarah’s (*Name changed for privacy). For years, Sarah stayed in an abusive relationship because she couldn’t imagine leaving her dog, Sam, behind. Sam was not just her dog – he was her emotional support, her children’s best friend and the idea of him being left behind or harmed was too much to bear. When Sarah learned that she could bring Sam to our shelter she made the brave decision to leave. Sam adjusted to life in the shelter right away.  His sweet nature brought smiles to everyone at the shelter, especially our shelter team members who love to snuggle with our furry residents on their breaks! Today, Sarah, her children and Sam are all thriving in their new home.

Reflecting on this year, it’s incredible to see how this one decision – to allow pets into our shelter – has made such a huge impact.  With the continued support of our community and our partners, we are looking forward to welcoming even more wagging tails, purrs and brave families in the years to come.  Here’s to another year of hope, healing and plenty of pets!
