Every October, Canadians join a global movement to mark A Week Without Violence, a seven-day series during the third week of the month to end violence against women and girls. YWCAs nationwide unite from October 21 to 26, championing diverse approaches to building a safe and equitable future.
Lack of housing, food, economic security and choice can often be precursors to violence. By empowering women and their families to learn, engage and take steps toward a bright future we can raise awareness and end the cycle of violence in our communities.
According to a 2022/2023 Statistics Canada report, domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness in women. These causes are then exacerbated by a lack of affordable and safe housing options, becoming a significant barrier for women when trying to move out of shelters.
While A Week Without Violence highlights the ongoing efforts and progress made to solve these issues, there are many opportunities to advocate for safe and affordable housing for women and their families.
Housing Insecurity and Violence: A Dangerous Cycle
Studies have consistently shown that a lack of secure housing can lead to an increased risk of violence. A report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives found that 91% of women in Canada who are homeless have experienced assault.
In Calgary, the number of women experiencing homelessness is growing with an increase of 21% from 2018 to 2022. This alarming statistic demonstrates the urgent need for affordable housing options to break the cycle of violence and homelessness.
Advocating for safe and affordable housing can help address social barriers with rising rental and home ownership costs to uplift vulnerable members across Calgary. Our ongoing housing advocacy with programs like YW’s Taylor Family Home offers affordable, safe housing for women and their children to overcome trauma, focus on healing and develop economic stability.
Since opening in 2023, YW’s Taylor Family Home has served over 30 women and 100 children. In addition to providing safe, affordable housing, we support women to overcome trauma, focus on healing, develop economic stability and secure safe, sustainable accommodations.
Safe Housing: Changing the Narrative for Violence Prevention
At the forefront of helping women in their search for a better future, advocating for affordable housing options is key to supporting every individual’s unique journey. YW’s Transitional Housing program helps women who are in crisis or transition, find and secure safe, affordable permanent housing while they receive individualized support.
50% of residents in YW’s Transitional Housing program report experiencing domestic violence in the past year. After securing housing, through YW’s Outreach Services, we support women as they transition into the community, providing resources and safe spaces to heal from trauma to build self-reliance, personal growth and independence.
By providing secure and supportive housing, we empower women to achieve financial independence, develop essential life skills and rebuild prosperous futures.
